Among the most loyal are America’s farmers, who are a tiny minority of the population but exert disproportionate political influence because of our electoral system, which gives 3.2 million Iowans as many senators as almost 40 million Californians.

At one level, it’s not hard to see why farmers supported Trump. Hostility to nonwhite immigrants was central to his campaign, and such hostility tends to be highest in places where there aren’t actually many immigrants. So rural America, with its still tiny immigrant population , was a receptive audience for his fear-mongering. More generally, Making America Great Again — which was basically about setting back the clock racially and culturally — was a message that played well in places that still tend to think of themselves (and are told by politicians to think of themselves) as the Real America, as opposed to the big metropolitan areas where most Americans actually live.

The United States could help resolve the rift between two critical allies. But it has shown little interest.

This is a fight in which everyone stands to lose except China and North Korea, and the Trump administration should be heavily leaning on its closest Asian allies to come to their senses.

The roots of the animosity stretch to Japan’s colonization of Korea between 1910 and 1945, and more specifically the brutal exploitation of Koreans as sex slaves and forced laborers during World War II. Passions have flared regularly but have usually been tamped down through the alliance of the two democracies with the United States against threats posed by North Korea and China, and by the extensive trade between South Korea and Japan.

South Korea is one of the world’s biggest makers of the chips and Japan is a major supplier of the chemicals; Japan hinted that the Koreans were not properly handling the chemicals, which have military applications. Worse, on Aug. 2 Japan announced it was removing South Korea from a “white list” of trusted trade partners. South Koreans reacted with a furious anti-Japan campaign, including boycotts of Japanese goods. Then came the break in intelligence sharing.

“タマゴヤキ” は 日本食の中心的存在で、卵が四角く何層にも丸められて焼かれていて、柔らかく繊細な歯ごたえのオムレツである。昔から専用の卵焼き器が使われるが、ここで紹介するレシピは、８インチのテフロンのフライパンでも大丈夫。少しぐらいちぎれても気にしない。次の層で隠すことができる。
PREPARATION 準備・作り方
- In a small bowl, combine eggs, mirin, soy sauce, dashi (if using) and sugar. Whisk until well combined.

- Pour about 3 tablespoons of the egg mixture into the pan and quickly tilt the pan, swirling the egg mixture around to create an even layer. If there are thicker areas, gently poke a small hole at the thickest point with chopsticks and tilt and swirl the pan to cover exposed areas with more raw egg to form an even layer.

- After the layer is cooked, about 1 minute, using chopsticks or a rubber spatula, gently lift the egg edges on the farthest side to loosen the layer’s grip. Continue to fold the egg equally on itself until you have a narrow, rectangular omelet at the edge of the pan nearest you. Reduce the heat to medium-low if the egg is browning.

Use chopsticks or a soft spatula to gently lift up the folded omelet and tilt the pan toward you so the raw egg mixture runs under the omelet.

トランプ政権が成し遂げた主な経済政策は、貿易関税と企業への法人税減税の２つであるとのことです。記事では、それらが現実ではアメリカ国民の利益になっていないばかりか、反対に海外の投資家を潤しているだけだとしています。ノーベル賞経済学者(ポール・クルーグマン氏)のコラムです。
200億ドルの中国への関税は、実際は、対象となる物品の価格を上昇させただけとのことです。買い手のアメリカ国民が負担を背負うはめになったとのことです。法人税減税も、国の税収を減らし、一方で海外投資家(株所有35％)へ400億ドルの増益をもたらしているだけだとしています。
法人税減税は、労働者の賃金をアップさせるという名目の政治的人気取りや、献金者・団体達への見返りとして行われました。しかし、利益を得た企業側は一度だけのボーナスアップに使い、 (前年の高い税率の決算分に支出を上乗せして控除額を上げただけで)、その後は元へ戻すかボーナス額を下げているとの事です。
米国では、減税による増収分を大手企業がこぞって巨額の自社株買いに使いこんだことが報道されています。一方で設備投資やサービス、賃金アップには殆ど使わず、法人税減税が経済活性化には繋がっていないと批判されています。
