先週金曜日に、東京も含めて世界中の若者や子供達による環境問題ストライキが行われました。スウェーデンの16歳の環境運動家グリエタ・テュンベリ氏に啓発されたものです。
テュンベリ氏は、スウェーデン国会前で1人での座り込みを毎週始めて以来マスコミに取り上げられ、世界の若者達による地球温暖化に対する活動のシンボルとなっています。先週の国連環境サミットや米国国会公聴会の為にソーラー帆船でニューヨークへ辿りついた時に、彼女が最初に感じたのは臭い匂いだったとの事です。
米国下院では、石油・天然ガス業界に支えられた保守派議員による冷やかしの質問に対しても果敢に反論しながら、彼女自身の言葉にではなく「科学者達の声に耳を傾けてほしい。」と証言しています。
米国の環境関連ニュースでは、1970年から現在にかけて北米全体の野鳥の総数が3分の1消滅したという研究報告や、トランプ政権による排気ガスや石炭採掘の規制緩和、特定の自然保護地区の保護撤廃、反ソーラー・風力発電の政策等が批判されています。
テュンベリ氏は国連で、「あなた方は口ばかりです。どうして平気でいられるのですか？ あなた方は、偽りの約束で私の夢と子供時代を盗んだのです。 “How dare you! You’ve stolen my dreams and childhood with your empty words”」「大勢の人が苦しんで、死んでいて、自然の生態系も崩れているのに、あなた方が口にする事はお金の事や経済成長がいつまでも続くというおとぎ話だけです。」と涙目で憤りを見せ、人類の将来が無くなってしまうと警告しています。
At U.N. Climate Summit, a Call for Action Yields Few Commitments
国連環境サミットにおいて。地球温暖化対策を求める声に反して、各国の約束は乏しい。
The world is getting hotter faster, the World Meteorological Organization concluded in its latest report Sunday, with the five-year period between 2014 and 2019 the warmest on record. Emissions of carbon dioxide, a major contributor to global warming when it is pumped into the atmosphere, are at record highs. The seas are rising rapidly. The average global temperature is 1.1 degrees Celsius higher than what it was in the mid-19th century, and at the current pace, average global temperatures will be 3 degrees Celsius higher by the end of this century.
世界の温度はどんどん急速に上昇している。日曜日の国連世界気象機関の最新報告によると、2014年から2019年の5年間が、観測史上最も気温が高くなっている。大気へ排出されて地球温暖化を一番助長する二酸化炭素の排出量は、現在最大になっている。海面も急速に上がり、19世紀半ばに比べ世界の平均温度は1.1度高い。そして、現在のペースでいくと、世界の気温は今世紀末までに3度上昇する。
Mr. Guterres said in his opening remarks. “I refuse to be an accomplice in the destruction of their one and only home.”
国連総長グティエレス氏はサミット開会の言葉で「（私やあなたの孫娘や孫達）の唯一の故郷（地球）の破壊に加担することを拒みます。」と述べた。
Mr. Guterres’s most direct call went to those countries that use money from their taxpayers to subsidize fossil fuel projects that, as he put it, “boost hurricanes, spread tropical diseases and heighten conflict.”
グティエレス総長の声は、国民の税金を使って化石燃料採掘を支援する国家へ向けられ「 ハリケーンを巨大化させ、熱帯地域にしか無かった感染病を世界へ広げ、紛争を増加させている。」とした。
“Everyone said, ‘We hear you,’” she said. “But they are tone deaf.”
(フランスの経済学者で元環境大使のロランス・テュビアナ氏は)「(政治家達は) 皆が “あなたの言っていることは分かる。” と言うのです。」彼女は言う。「しかし、彼らは話を全く聞いていないのです。」
Studies show that if emissions continue to rise at their current pace, the number of people needing humanitarian aid as a result of natural disasters could double by 2050. And a sweeping report from 13 United States federal agencies last year warned that failing to rein in warming could shave 10 percent off the country’s economy by century’s end.
研究によると、現在のペースで排出が続くと、自然災害後に人道支援が必要になる人の数は2050年までに現在の2倍になる(年間約2億人)。昨年の米国13の省庁による総括的報告書によると、温暖化問題を収拾し損なうことで米国の経済が今世紀末までに10％削り取られてしまうと警告している。
