環太平洋地震帯の上にあるロシア東端の世界遺産カムチャッカ半島には300以上の火山と30の活火山があって、毎年数回噴火しているとの事です。火山学者にとっては、カムチャッカ以上の場所は地球上には無いとの事です。
世界で唯一6種類の野生のサケが繁殖する場所でもあるとの事です。観光促進や、鉱物やその他の開発と自然保護との間でジレンマがあり議論されているとの事です。
2万2千年前に米大陸と陸続きで人や動植物の行き来があり、17世紀には毛皮を確保するためコサックの人々の植民地となり、アラスカがアメリカに売られた一方でカムチャッカがロシアの軍事拠点として機能し、冷戦時代は国内でのアクセスも制限されていたとの事です。
大自然の森林や登山、スポーツの他に、シャチや熊、オオワシ等も観光の目玉となっているとの事です。

While salmon inhabit the waterways year round, millions return to spawn every summer. After laying their eggs, they die, and their carcasses turn into a biomass that stokes the fecund nature.
サケは一年中流れの中で生息するが、毎年夏に卵を産みに数百万尾が上流へ戻ってくる。卵を産んだあとは死に、その屍がバイオマスの土となって肥沃な大地をつくり出す。
“This entire biomass migrates to different areas, on the land, in the forests, in the meadows, in the rivers themselves, and it shapes the ecosystem,” said Yevgeny G. Lobkov, a jovial, goateed professor of biology at Kamchatka State Technical University. “In essence, the entire ecosystem of Kamchatka is built on the carcasses of spawning salmon.”

Bears, trees, everything grows bigger. Researchers at Kronotsky Nature Reserve, a Federal protected area, found that boom years for spawning salmon produced wider tree rings.

That natural bounty also brings trouble, however. The animals, especially in a region lacking economic resources, have attracted poachers for decades.

But the biggest poaching prize has long been the salmon and their roe, which underpin the local economy and constitute the staple diet for some 14,000 indigenous residents.

トランプ氏がトルコのエルドガン大統領と電話で話し、ホワイトハウスがトルコ軍のシリア北東部への侵攻を支持する事を決めたと発表しました。シリア国境でのトルコ軍増強も報道されています。
シリアに小規模で残っている米軍が撤退・後退する中で、シリア北東部のクルド人部隊がトルコ軍に押し潰され、新たな大量難民の流出や流れに乗じてISISイスラム国の復興もあるだろうと危惧されています。
米軍の撤退によってイランやロシアへ対する軍事的牽制も無くなるとの事です。
米国政権内では、国防省や国務省がシリア撤退に反対する中で、トランプ氏に反対する安全保障担当官や補佐官達の相次ぐ辞任や解任があり、反対の声が弱体化したとの事です。
シリア北東部に半自治地域を確保しているクルド人達は戦禍を避けて新たな難民の波を引き起こすだろうと予想されています。(エルドガン氏は、国境沿いの北東シリアをトルコの管理下にして難民が住める区域を作ると主張し、少しずつクルド人勢力を南へ押し下げているとの事です。)
一方で、米軍に支えられながらISISイスラム国を抑え込んでいるクルド人部隊は、シリアと手を組み直しトルコ国境地域で更なる不安定化をもたらすと予想されています。

That would give Mr. Erdogan a ready place to send hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and prove yet again his influence with Mr. Trump on Syria policy.

先週金曜日に、東京も含めて世界中の若者や子供達による環境問題ストライキが行われました。スウェーデンの16歳の環境運動家グリエタ・テュンベリ氏に啓発されたものです。
テュンベリ氏は、スウェーデン国会前で1人での座り込みを毎週始めて以来マスコミに取り上げられ、世界の若者達による地球温暖化に対する活動のシンボルとなっています。先週の国連環境サミットや米国国会公聴会の為にソーラー帆船でニューヨークへ辿りついた時に、彼女が最初に感じたのは臭い匂いだったとの事です。
米国下院では、石油・天然ガス業界に支えられた保守派議員による冷やかしの質問に対しても果敢に反論しながら、彼女自身の言葉にではなく「科学者達の声に耳を傾けてほしい。」と証言しています。

The world is getting hotter faster, the World Meteorological Organization concluded in its latest report Sunday, with the five-year period between 2014 and 2019 the warmest on record. Emissions of carbon dioxide, a major contributor to global warming when it is pumped into the atmosphere, are at record highs. The seas are rising rapidly. The average global temperature is 1.1 degrees Celsius higher than what it was in the mid-19th century, and at the current pace, average global temperatures will be 3 degrees Celsius higher by the end of this century.

“最高の死亡記事(追悼文)とそれに続くびっくりなお葬式”
アメリカ、コネチカット州の田舎町で、いたずら屋で冗談の好きだった父親の死亡(追悼)記事を娘が地域の友人へ向けてお悔やみ欄に載せ、それがソーシャルメディアで世界中に広がったとの事です。
82歳で亡くなったジョー・ヘラー氏の三女が書いた死亡記事によると、亡くなる前の週に「お父様の容態は良くありません “Your father is a very sick man (病気・”気違い”) 」 と医師が言うと、娘達が口を揃えて 「“You have no idea. “ 全くその通りです。想像できないくらいですよ。 」と応えたとの事です。
大恐慌の時代に生まれ、倹約 ”frugality”, とガラクタ集め ” hoarding“と’安っぽい’イタズラ ”cheap mischief“ で育ったとの事です。兄弟や友達がいたずらの犠牲者になったとの事です。
小さい時に、お弁当を盗む友達に下剤の入ったケーキやうんちハンバーグのサンドイッチをあげたとの事です。最初に飼った犬も彼が“おなら fart”と名付けたので、お母さんは犬を探すたびに “おなら” と大声で呼ばなくてはならなかったとの事です。
娘達が大人になってデートの相手が家を訪問した際は、彼らの車のナンバー (事故記録)とタイヤの減り具合をまず調べ、その後迎え入れた家の中では、散弾銃や漁の手銛(もり)、羊の去勢器を見える所に飾ったとの事です。
退職後は、町をうろつく野良犬達を保護するボランティアをして、彼は捕まえたどの “囚人” も殺処分することを許さず、新しい飼い主を見つけ、嫌われて追い返される犬は “ひどい野郎(A**hole)” と名付けて可愛がったとの事です。一方で、豪華クルーザー等を浮かべながら夏の間近くの高級リゾート海岸をうろつくお金持ち達の事は、華やかに並べた語彙で罵ったとの事です。
若い時に、富裕地域へ移った会社の場所が肌に合わないと辞め、地元に残って町の巡査役をしたり、ボランティア消防団、雪かき、横断歩道のガイド、町の人たちのお使い役をして頼られたとの事です。亡くなる時は、葬式はせずに庭に穴を掘ってそこへ転がして欲しい “dig a hole in the backyard and just roll him in.” としたとの事です。ゴミ収集場へ物を集めに行く趣味もあったとの事です。
“There wasn’t a road, restaurant or friend’s house in Essex that he didn’t fall asleep on or in,” Ms. Heller wrote, adding that her father “left his family with a house full of crap, 300 pounds of birdseed and dead houseplants that they have no idea what to do with.”

The obituary implored attendees to wear “the most inappropriate T-shirt that you are comfortable being seen in public with, as Joe often did.”

On Friday morning, Mr. Heller’s body, in a coffin draped with an American flag, was placed on the 1941 Mack fire truck he helped restore and taken to Centerbrook Cemetery to be buried next to his wife, Irene, who died in 2015, and whom he embarrassed daily “with his mouth and choice of clothing,” according to the obituary.

Family members followed the fire truck in Mr. Heller’s immaculately restored 1932 Plymouth roadster with, as per his request, a set of plastic testicles dangling from the rear bumper.

After the burial, Ms. Heller held the American flag presented in her father’s honor and said perhaps the obit had struck a chord with regular people.

台風15号が関東で猛威を振るう少し前に、米国では、東海岸沿いに大型ハリケーン“ドリアン”が通り、バハマ諸島で多数の犠牲者を出した後、東海岸でも (トルネードも伴って) 大きな被害を残しています。

With the Bahamas struggling back from a devastating hurricane and Tokyo recovering from a record-setting typhoon , we found ourselves asking why dangerous storms were likelier to erupt at predictable times of the year.

The answer emerges from global phenomena. Radiation from the sun falls unequally on our tilted, spinning planet, hitting with most impact at the Equator. 米国トランプ政権(と共和党)が推し進めた大型減税が、富裕層や大企業ばかりを優遇して、結果として一部の中間層の増税に繋がったり低所得層の更なる貧困化を招いたりしているとのことです。国の借金を増やして無駄遣いしているだけだと批判されています。
その減税案の一部で、アメリカの貧困地域を活性化させるという建設計画に、巨額の投資が集まっているとの事です。ところが内実は、裕福な地域で超高級アパートや豪華ホテルなどが建設され、貧困地域は置き去りにされているとの事です。
恩恵を受けている受益者の中には、トランプ家の家族や支援者、政権幹部、政治家、大手不動産業、投資会社、大手銀行等の名が連ねているとの事です。
もともとは、貧困地域での経済的機会を増やすという指定区域 (Opportunity Zone) が定められ、投資による利益への免税が受けられるという計画とのことです。ところが、貧困でない地域が自治体や政府によって指名され、高収益が見込まれる裕福な地域ばかりで開発が進められているとの事です。
