NY Times Europe から、英国の医学会で専門用語を患者にわかりやすい言葉へ見直そうという動きです。同時に、今まで専門医からかかりつけ医へ書いていた手紙も、患者へ向けて書くという要請がなされています。

LONDON — Doctors have long been chided for their seemingly unintelligible handwriting. Now, they are being urged to drop the Latin.

In an effort to improve written communication with patients, an initiative unveiled this week by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges — which represents 250,000 doctors in Britain — is encouraging doctors to ditch confusing medical jargon and instead write to their patients directly in plain, simple English.
患者との文章のやりとりを改善させる為に、25万人の英国の医者を擁する英国王室医学学会によって今週明らかにされた計画では、難しい医学専門用語を捨てて、患者に直接分かりやすい簡単な英語で書くよう促している。
Complicated medical terminology is often misinterpreted by patients and can cause confusion and anxiety, the academy says. The guidelines offered state, for example:
複雑な医学用語はしばしば患者に間違って受け取られ、混乱や不安を招く、と医師会は言う。新しい要綱では、次のような例がある：
- Avoid using words that can cause confusion, such as “chronic.” While the term in medical circles means a longstanding condition, it is often taken by patients to mean “really bad.”

- When describing diagnoses, for example, instead of “renal,” use “kidney.”

- Instead of “acute,” use “sudden” or “short-term.”
“急性”の代わりに、“急な”や“短期”を使う。
- Instead of “atrial fibrillation,” use “irregular pulse.”

The guidance also applies when prescribing medicine: Doctors have been asked to use English such as “twice daily” instead of the Latin abbreviation “B.D.” (bis in die).
要綱は薬の処方に関しても：医師は、ラテン語の略字“B.D.(１日２回)”の代わりに、“１日２回”というように英語を使うよう要請されている。
Patients who participated in the pilot project said they found the new style of letters more “informative, supportive and useful.”
試験的企画に参加した患者たちは、新しい書き方の方が、“分かりやすく、親切で、実際に役に立つ”としている。
“I appreciate the letter addressed to me — the patient,” one participant wrote. “I can now understand the treatment I am having for my illness and I’m happy to know that I am making some progress along the way.”
