Today is the eighth annual Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. In 2010, then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California established the first statewide day in U.S. history honoring an Asian-American, and several other states followed suit. New York City is making its inaugural celebration today.
今日が、８年目の“フレッド・コレマツ市民と憲法の自由記念日”である。2010年に、当時のアーノルド・シュワルツネッガーカルフォルニア州知事は、米国史上初の日系アメリカ人に敬意を表し州として記念日を設立し、他の複数の州も続いた。NY市では今日、 記念日発足式典を開く。
Mr. Korematsu fought the discriminatory federal order, bringing his case to the Supreme Court in 1944. The court sided with the government, ruling that national security outweighed civil liberties.
コレマツ氏は、差別的連邦(行政)命令と戦い、1944年に最高裁判所まで裁判を持ち込んだ。裁判所は政府側に寄り、国家の安全が市民の自由より優先するとした。
