In Britain, Austerity Is Changing Everything
After eight years of budget cutting, Britain is looking less like the rest of Europe and more like the United States, with a shrinking welfare state and spreading poverty.

記事の解説によると、過去8年で、プレスコットは半分、リバプールは約3分の2の中央政府からの予算削減があったとする。英国は第二次大戦の壊滅的被害への対処として福祉国家を築いた後、サッチャー時代に様々なサービスが削られつつも、全体として福祉を維持してきたが、2008年の金融危機後に大幅削減となったとする。また、17世紀から奴隷・綿・煙草の国際貿易で富を築いた港町リバプールが今は4分の１の住民が貧困層となり、消防員や見回る福祉職員の大幅な減少で、火事の増加や火事の死傷者が増え、生活保護の減少に伴ってロウソクで明かりを灯す人が増えていると紹介している。
