NY Times Deal Book から書評です。記事自体はMITで物理と人間学を教える物理学者アラン・ライトマン氏が書いた本をコロンビア大学ビジネススクールの教授が批判的に皮肉的に書いています。
Review: ‘In Praise of Wasting Time’ Speaks Ominously of a Digital ‘Grid’
書評：‘時間の無駄遣いを称賛して’(本のタイトル) はデジタル‘グリッド’に暗影をなげかける
His book, “In Praise of Wasting Time,” proposes “that half our waking minds be designated and saved for quiet reflection.” Failure to heed his recommendation, Professor Lightman warns, will result in the collective destruction of “our inner selves and our creative capacities.”
彼の本“時間の無駄遣いを称賛して”は、“人が目覚めている時間の半分を静かな内省に当てる”ことを提案する。この助言を無視すると、ライトマン教授は、“我々人間が内なる自分と創造的な力”を社会全体で破壊してしまう事になると警告する。
The common culprit behind “today’s time-driven, wired existence” that threatens our very humanity is identified ominously as something called “the grid.” The grid is described as “the vast and all-consuming network” whose digital tentacles have already transformed “our entire way of thinking” and “our way of being in the world, our social and psychological ethos.”
我々人類そのものに脅威をもたらしている“今日の、時間に囚われて電子的に繋がった存在”の裏にある共通の犯人は、“グリッド(網・膜)”と呼ばれるものであると不吉に言う。 この網目は”広大で全てを飲み込むネットワーク”であるとし、そのデジタルの手足が“我々の思考の全体”と“我々の世界における存在、 社会的心理的な時代の精神”を既に変化させている、とする。
Professor Lightman documented a variety of disturbing social phenomena to back up his views. These include an increase in teenage depression, … and a decline in creativity among children.

For instance, the research on child creativity notes a decline beginning in 1990, which Professor Lightman asserts “approximately coincides with the public emergence of the internet.”
