NY Times Insider
A Day Watching ‘Japan’s Wildest Game’
Translated as “topple the pole,” the game involves dozens of attackers — all boys — charging across a field to pull down a big wooden pole that’s being held upright by another couple of dozen defenders.
The botaoshi tournament was the penultimate event of the day. … We were impressed with the students, who were given full autonomy to plan and run the all-day festival.
They were eager to talk about the festival and what botaoshi meant to the juniors and seniors who played it. The game had been played at the school since 1929, and they were proud to keep the tradition alive, even if other schools, unnerved by the violence, have dropped it from their sports festivals. These students were undeterred by injuries, and believed that the game was in fact made safer by various tweaks to the rules. (Nevertheless, hundreds of students get injured every year, most with bruises and scrapes.)
Several matches ended in stalemates, which required a second match. The losing teams were distraught, with the players falling to the ground in tears. They retreated en masse to their classmates and bowed deeply to apologize for their performance.
The entire process — the detailed preparation, the enthusiasm, the seriousness of the task — reminded me of what I missed about Japan. The game itself seemed like an anachronism in some ways, but I realized you didn’t need fancy equipment, over-officious parents and lots of rules to call it a game, or a tradition.
