The economic hardship that Uber and its competitors had inflicted on conventional drivers in New York and London and other cities had become overwhelming.

On Monday morning, Doug Schifter, a livery driver in his early 60s, killed himself with a shotgun in front of City Hall in Lower Manhattan, having written a lengthy Facebook post several hours earlier laying out the structural cruelties that had left him in such dire circumstance.
月曜日の朝、60代前半のハイヤー運転手ダグ・シフターはマンハッタン先端のNY市役所前で散弾銃によって自殺した。数時間前にはフェイスブックで長い投稿をして、タクシー業界の構造的で残酷な状況が彼をとても苦しい状況へ陥らせたとした。
記事冒頭に紹介されるベイラビ・ディサイNYタクシー労働者連合会長によると、UberとLyft の２社で2016年にAmazonとWalmart, Microsoft 3社を合わせたよりも多くの金額が政治活動に費やされ、UberやLyftの運営側に都合の良いように業界規制が変えられたとしている。
UberやLyftのような会社にとってコストのかかる車検、保険、安全性その他の規制が廃止または減らされ、今までの一般のタクシー会社がまともに競争に参加できなくなったとしている。
